FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Straight answers to the questions we hear most.
Costs, insurance & payment
-
We are currently in-network with Aetna. For all other insurance plans, we are an out-of-network provider. That means you pay at the time of service, and we provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. The Mentaya tool above will give you an estimate based on your specific plan.
-
Yes. Inside Out participates in the Craig Tiger Act program to provide additional support to first responders who want to preserve their privacy with their agency and insurance companies. Here is what that covers:
Cost: 100% covered. No copay, no deductible, no out-of-pocket cost to you.
Sessions: Up to 36 sessions per qualifying incident.
Confidentiality: Completely separate from your department. Your chain of command is not notified. Session content is not reported. Your participation does not appear in your personnel file.
If you are a firefighter, police officer, EMT, dispatcher, or corrections officer and want to know whether you qualify, reach out before your first session. We will walk you through how it works.

Sessions with Christina Behrens, LPC are $250. Sessions with our associate clinicians are $195. The rate is the same regardless of session type, intake or standard. We are happy to talk through fees during your free consultation. If cost is a barrier, it is worth asking.
-
Our rates reflect the clinical training, specialized certifications, and years of experience our team brings. Inside Out clinicians hold advanced training in EMDR and sand tray therapy, not just general licensure. When you pay privately for therapy, you are also paying for clinical freedom: your therapist decides what you need, how often to meet, and which approaches to use, based entirely on you.
-
We carry a limited number of reduced-fee spots for clients who demonstrate financial need. These are not always available. The best way to find out is to ask during your consultation — we will be honest with you about what is possible.
-
We accept credit and debit cards, HSA/FSA cards, and standard payment methods. Payment is collected at the time of service.
-
Sessions cancelled with less than [24/48] hours of notice are charged a late cancellation fee. Life happens, and we handle things case by case. We ask that you let us know as soon as possible.
How out-of-netword benefits work
-
A superbill is an itemized receipt your therapist provides after each session. It includes your diagnosis code, the service code, the date, the fee paid, and your clinician's license information. You submit it to your insurance company, and if your plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, they reimburse a portion of the cost directly to you.
-
The Mentaya tool at the top of this page checks your plan in about a minute without billing your insurance. You can also call the member services number on the back of your card and ask:
Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?
What is my out-of-network deductible, and how much of it have I met?
What percentage of the allowed amount does my plan reimburse after the deductible?
Those three numbers give you a realistic picture of what you will actually pay.

Under the No Surprises Act, clients have the right to a Good Faith Estimate of expected costs before beginning services. We provide this automatically to any client who requests it or who is not using insurance for their sessions. If you have questions about what your care will cost before your first appointment, just ask.
Getting started
-
It is a 15-minute phone call. We talk about what brought you in, what you have already tried if anything, and what working with Inside Out would look like. You do not need to have a diagnosis, a clear sense of what is wrong, or language for what you are experiencing. Knowing something is off is enough to start.
-
The consultation is how we figure that out together. We do not pressure you toward committing, and we will tell you honestly if we think you would be better served somewhere else. What matters is that you end up with care that actually works for you, not just care that is convenient for us.
-
No. A diagnosis is required when billing insurance, which is part of why many clients choose to pay privately. If you are coming in for burnout, a hard life transition, relationship strain, or anxiety that does not fit a clean diagnostic category, you are still fully eligible for care at Inside Out.
-
Inside Out is in-person only, and that is a deliberate choice. The work that happens here, whether EMDR, sand tray, or simply sitting with someone in a room, relies on the kind of presence that a screen does not replicate. Sessions take place at the Peoria, AZ office. If you are in the Northwest Valley and want therapy that is actually in the room with you, that is exactly what we offer.
-
That is one of the most common things new clients mention. Bad fits are real, and so is therapy that felt fine but did not actually change anything. We do not assume you will trust us just because you showed up. We earn it. If something is not landing, we want to know, and we would rather adjust than have you quietly disengage.
For first responders and health care professionals
-
Because compartmentalization works, until it does not. Years of high-functioning suppression does not mean the material disappears. It accumulates. At some point, often after a transition, a critical incident, or just one too many calls, the body stops cooperating with the mental override. Irritability at home, numbness, trouble sleeping, intrusive thoughts — those are not signs of weakness. They are what years of unprocessed stress look like when it finally surfaces. The fact that it is coming up now does not mean something is wrong with you. It means something in you finally has room to respond.
-
Not through us. Your sessions are protected under standard confidentiality laws. If you are using the first responder EAP program, participation is completely separate from your department, your chain of command is not notified, and session content is not reported anywhere. If you are paying privately or through insurance, the same confidentiality rules apply. If you have a specific concern about your situation (a clearance, a fitness-for-duty evaluation, a pending review) bring it up before your first session so we can address it directly.
-
This is a real concern, not an irrational one, and it is worth taking seriously before you start. Voluntarily seeking therapy does not, on its own, trigger a fitness-for-duty evaluation or affect a clearance. What matters is how you pay and what goes into your records. Sessions paid privately create no insurance trail and require no billable diagnosis in any third-party system. The EAP program is structured specifically to protect first responders from that kind of exposure. If your situation has specific variables, talk to us before your first session.
-
That is a reasonable starting point, not a disqualifier. A lot of the work we do is not primarily verbal. EMDR, for example, works at the level of the nervous system, not the narrative. You do not need to reconstruct your feelings or perform insight you do not have. You do not have to be emotionally fluent to make progress. We work with where you actually are, not where you think you should be.
-
Christina's husband is a retired police officer. The practice sees nurses, firefighters, EMTs, and dispatchers regularly. We are not unfamiliar with the culture, the dark humor, the code of silence, or the particular way that people in these professions have learned to stay upright under pressure. You should not have to spend your sessions educating your therapist on the environment you work in. We already understand the frame. What we do not know is your specific story, and that is where we start.
-
Inside Out participates in an Employee Assistance Program designed for first responders following a critical incident. It covers firefighters, police officers, EMTs, dispatchers, and corrections officers. Key details:
Sessions are 100% covered. No cost to you.
Up to 36 sessions per qualifying incident.
Completely confidential from your department. Your participation is not reported to your chain of command, does not appear in your personnel file, and session content stays private.
To find out whether you qualify and how to access it, reach out before your first session. We will walk you through what is needed.
For helpers and achievers who hold it all together
-
High-functioning and struggling are not mutually exclusive. Holding everything together on the outside while running on empty internally is not a sign that things are fine. It is a sign that you are very good at managing. The exhaustion underneath that management is real, and it tends to compound. You do not need to hit a wall to qualify for care.
-
Often when therapy does not help, it is because the approach was not matched to the actual problem. Talk therapy builds insight, and insight is useful. But for many people, especially those carrying unprocessed stress in the body, understanding what happened is not enough to change how it lives in them. EMDR works at a different level, on the nervous system, not just the narrative. If you have spent years developing understanding of your patterns but not feeling differently, that gap is where we work.
-
Not at all. We see a lot of people in the helping professions, including therapists, nurses, social workers, and educators. The particular exhaustion of someone who holds space for others all day with no equivalent space for themselves is something we are familiar with. You know how this works. That can actually make the process more efficient. You do not have to pretend you are not a professional while you are a client.
-
You set the pace. We do not push you toward depth you have not consented to. Therapy is not supposed to feel like an ambush. We follow your lead, name what we are noticing, and let you decide what you want to do with it. If you want to slow down, we slow down. If something feels like too much, you say so. We work in a way that keeps you in the driver's seat.
-
Yes. We are not going to agree with everything, validate every decision, or let avoidance go unaddressed. Clients who have been frustrated by therapists who simply reflected things back at them tend to find Inside Out a different experience. We are warm, but we are also direct. We will tell you what we notice, including the things that might be uncomfortable. That is part of what you are paying for.
For families & parents of children in therapy
-
The starting point is understanding what the behavior is communicating, because behavior in kids is rarely random. Irritability, shutdown, outbursts, withdrawal, and changes in school performance are often a nervous system's way of responding to something it does not have words for yet. The consultation call is a good place to describe what you are seeing. We can help you figure out whether therapy is the right next step and, if so, what approach makes the most sense.
-
No. We work with family systems, not against parents. Kids do not exist in isolation from their environment, and understanding the family context is part of doing this work well, not a setup for judgment. Most parents who bring their kids in are doing so because they are paying attention and want to help. That is what we see when you walk in.
-
That is exactly why sand tray therapy exists. Kids do not process the same way adults do, and trying to put a child in a chair and ask them to articulate their inner world rarely works. Sand tray lets children use miniature figures to represent their experiences, relationships, and inner world without needing words for it. The clinician observes and works with what shows up. For children as young as five, it is often a more natural and effective entry point than talk-based approaches.
-
Yes. Inside Out has the capacity to work with multiple family members, sometimes in the same time slot with different clinicians. If you have a child in therapy and are finding that you would benefit from support too, or if two siblings need to be seen regularly, we can often structure that in a way that is logistically manageable. It is worth asking about when you call.
-
You begin with a 15-minute phone call. That is it. You do not need a plan, a clear sense of what is wrong, or a block of time you do not have. The consultation is specifically designed to be low-lift. You describe what is going on, we tell you what we think might help and what working with us would look like, and you decide from there. There is no commitment involved in making the call.
